What is Pantheism, Really?

Ever felt that ‘God’ isn’t just some being up there, but somehow everywhere and in everything? If so, you might be thinking along pantheistic lines!

“Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave ’em all over everything you do” – Elvis Presley (Okay, maybe not directly about Pantheism, but it speaks to how our core view shapes everything!)

Pantheism is basically a way of seeing the world where God and the Universe are one and the same. Everything that exists – the stars, the trees, you, me, the whole cosmic shebang – is divine, making any ideas of ‘God’ into an optional extra without any physical evidence

Think of the word itself: “Pan” (meaning all) + “Theism” (meaning belief in God) = All is God.

So, for Pantheists, God isn’t a separate character pulling the strings. God, if we need that word, the reality we’re all part of.

Where Physics Meets Philosophy: Monistic Idealism

Interestingly, Pantheism chimes quite well with a mind-bending idea from physics and philosophy called Monistic Idealism. This suggests that reality isn’t fundamentally made of ‘stuff’, but of consciousness or ‘mind’. If the universe is God (Pantheism), and the universe is fundamentally mind-like (Monistic Idealism), then maybe ‘God’ can be re-imagined as the ultimate, universal consciousness and the physical world we see? Perhaps it’s a manifestation of this cosmic intelligent field.

So, What Does “God” Mean Here?

Crucially, when Pantheists do use the word “God,” often to assist in conversations with theists, they usually don’t mean a person-like figure. It’s more like:

  • The Basic Operating System: The fundamental principle or force running the universe.
  • The Great Web: The incredible interconnectedness and unity of everything.
  • The Source Code: The origin of all existence, where everything comes from and returns to.
  • The Big Mystery: That ultimate reality that’s perhaps currently beyond our full understanding, but need not be.

(Sometimes, saying ‘God’ is just easier shorthand, especially when talking with folks from traditional religions, rather than saying ‘Source’, ‘Universal Intelligence’, ‘The Field’, etc.)

What Pantheism is NOT:

Let’s clear up a few common mix-ups:

  • It’s NOT Atheism: Atheists say there’s no God. Pantheists say the Universe is God. Big difference!
  • It’s NOT Polytheism: Polytheists believe in many gods. Pantheists see one unified reality that is divine.
  • It’s NOT Just Nature Worship: Pantheists deeply respect nature as part of the divine, but the divine is the whole shebang, not just the wildlife, trees and rivers.
  • It’s NOT Panentheism: Spot the extra ‘en’! Panentheists believe God is in the universe, but also separate from and bigger than it. Pantheism says God is the universe, full stop. Modern physics offers some support for Pantheism, but not for Panentheism.

Why Does This Matter Today?

Pantheism feels really relevant right now:

Finding Unity: In a world that feels so divided, Pantheism’s message of fundamental interconnectedness is powerful and hopeful. for exploring pantheistic ideas and experiencing the divine in all of existence.

Loving Our Planet: Seeing the universe as divine naturally leads to respecting nature and wanting to protect our environment.

Science & Soul: It offers a way to feel spiritual connection and embrace scientific understanding of the universe, bridging that old gap.
